Wow! What a day……Nice early christmas pressie.
So myself, Chris and Jay from DBS Music Studios have been up to visit Lewis at Star Delta Mastering Studios based in deepest darkest Devon. After getting a bit lost on the way we sat in on the mastering session for a track by Devon band “The Beacons” which was recorded and mixed at DBS Music Studios for DBS Music’s Label, and what a day it was!
After having a chat (at length) about almost everything topic under the sun and drooling over the vast amounts of outboard gear, nicest room acoustic I have ever heard and the most amazing vinyl cutting lathe we cracked on with the session. I had no idea how much of an important task the mastering engineer had, both creatively and purely technically until today.
Using an Ampex 1/2” 2 track mastering tape machine, two SADIE systems with PRISM A/D convertors and a variety of Manley, Maselec and Cranesong compressors and EQs, Lewis really did an amazing job with the track and passed on a lot of his professional industry knowledge. It was by far one of the most educational and eye opening days I have ever spent!
The Beacons track will be available for download early 2012 and a video interview resource for DBS students will follow shortly (thanks to Chris)
Cheers All

So, here’s a sneaky peek at the new record cover for ‘Take Me With You’… artwork by the brilliant Alison Veazey…
We’ve just ordered a pair of these straight from Karma in America. They’re tiny omni-directional condenser mics and have been receiving some excellent reviews in both Sound On Sound and Tape-Op so we thought we’d see what all the fuss was about. They’ll arrive within the fortnight so we’ll let you know how they sound.
Oh, did we mention they cost less than £35 including shipping from the USA? We couldn’t believe it either!
Check out reviews here:

Shameless Self Promotion…
One of the bands I play in, ‘The Josie Newton Band’ recorded this video as a submission for the competition that Nerina Pallot is currently running with the chance of one lucky artist/band to support her live at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London, so please show some support! I can’t think of anyone more deserved than Josie for this opportunity.
This is our entry for the competition to win the chance to support Nerina Pallot at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
A BIG thank you to Plymouth Music Zone for allowing us to use their wonderful space; the amazing Rachel Newton for filming & editing the live recording and of course the awesome members of my band, Nathan Bawden on Drums and Karl Meyer on Bass.
I hope you like it, feel free to comment and check out some of my other videos, if you’d like to! :)
Thank you so much for your support!! :D

It’s nearly all over! Well… The recording process at least! All that is left to record is some female backing vocals, a few bars of flute and some string overdubs and then begins the process of editing, mixing and mastering.
So far we have recorded, in total, more than 350 HOURS of audio and have consumed almost as many cups of coffee! It’s not been an easy project but it has certainly been one of the most inspiring albums I have been a part of to date.
I’ll be posting some of the more advanced production techniques that I have used soon but until then, please get on to FaceBook and ‘like’ Martin Skews! Cheers and gone!
